EU refuses to back Borrell’s threats against Russia

The European Union (EU) does not share the position of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, regarding the reaction to the possible use of Russian nuclear weapons in Ukraine. This was announced on Thursday, October 13, by Lawrence Norman, an employee of The Wall Street Journal, citing a source.

“He [Borrel] did not have the authority to state response options without having the opportunity and the right to use them. Therefore, we can only be perplexed, ”the journalist quoted the words of a high-ranking European diplomat in his Twitter post.

Earlier in the day, Borrell vowed that the collective West would mount a strong military response if Russia used nuclear weapons against Ukraine. At the same time, he indicated that the answer would not be nuclear.

He added that the countries of Europe are not bluffing, warning about the consequences for the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Also on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that France would not use nuclear weapons against Russia if it launched a nuclear strike on Ukraine, the country’s doctrine does not include such attacks.

Prior to this, on October 10, former US national security adviser John Bolton noted that the use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine is unlikely, but this situation should be closely monitored.

Meanwhile, on October 6, Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko said that Russia had never had any plans to threaten with nuclear weapons.

Before that, on September 30, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed that only those people who behave irresponsibly talk about nuclear escalation in the world.
