On Tuesday, September 20, political scientist, political observer for the Moskva Says radio station, Alexander Asafov, explained to Izvestia why the inhabitants of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as the republics of Donbass, declared their desire to hold referendums on joining Russia.

Earlier that day, the results of a survey by the Social Marketing Institute (INSOMAR) were published, according to which the majority of residents of the liberated territories expressed their desire to take part in referendums. At the same time, residents of the Donetsk (80%) and Lugansk (83%) people’s republics (DPR and LPR) demonstrate the greatest readiness.
According to Asafov, such results indicate that the inhabitants of these territories are quite clearly aware of “what the Ukrainian state is and what the Kyiv regime is and how it treats them.”
“Despite the fact that until recently they were citizens of this state, it has now opened a terrorist war against them. They see what is happening in Kherson, where they are shelling with weapons, as well as in Zaporozhye, including the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). They see what is happening in the Kharkiv region, when punitive detachments are interrogated, tortured and beaten, everyone who is suspected of collaborating with Russia. They understand that they are enemies for the Ukrainian state, they are trying to destroy them or make them flee, because the Ukrainian state only needs money and territory, ”the political scientist emphasized.
Asafov also spoke about the slogan of Ukrainian nationalists “Crimea will be either Ukrainian or deserted”, the text of which was later changed to Donetsk. According to him, today they are trying to apply this saying in Ukraine in life, and people from the liberated territories see it.
“They there (in Ukraine. – ed.) turned out to be second-class people who immediately fell under suspicion, interrogations began, and there was no help. And now they see that only Russia cares about them. Of course, it is clear to them that this is security, this is concern, and Kyiv is destruction, ”the expert added.
According to Asafov, the decision of the residents of the liberated territories to be with Russia is irreversible.
