Words about Hungary’s intention to return Transcarpathia were called propaganda in Ukraine

Speculation about Hungary’s intention to return Transcarpathia to the country is nothing more than propaganda. This was announced on Monday, October 10, by Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine.

“To talk about this claim (Hungary in Transcarpathia. – Ed.) would be empty propaganda. I don’t think that it would ever have arisen even at a theoretical level from Hungary,” Podolyak said in an interview with the Hungarian portal Telex.

According to him, Kyiv and Budapest could “very quickly” settle their differences regarding the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, without the influence of Moscow. At the same time, the negative consequences of abandoning international law will be much greater than the benefits of acquiring territory, Podolyak pointed out.

Earlier, in mid-July, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary, like any other country bordering Ukraine, should be ready to defend itself if necessary. He pointed out that in case of emergencies in Ukrainian Transcarpathia, the country would protect the Hungarians by force of arms.

Szijjarto recalled that today 150,000 Hungarians live in Transcarpathia.

Tensions in relations between Ukraine and Hungary arose against the background of discussions about the Ukrainian law on education, which entered into force on September 28, 2017. It significantly reduces the possibility of education in minority languages.
