Coco Montoya, Yid Vicious and a fall festival among Fond du Lac’s … – Fond du Lac Reporter

FOND DU LAC – This week, local events include lots of live music, a chance to meet your local farmers and a lumberjack-style competition.

Here are five can’t-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. Blues singer Coco Montoya to hold concert at Thrasher

Award-winning and internationally renowned blues-rock guitarist, singer and songwriter Coco Montoya will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Thrasher Opera House, 506 Mill St., Green Lake. He is promoting the release of his sixth Alligator Records album, “Writing On The Wall.”

Montoya’s debut album, released in 1995, earned him the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist. For his newest album, his road band joined him for the first time in the studio. They are keyboardist and songwriter Jeff Paris, bassist Nathan Brown and drummer Rena Beavers.

2. Yid Vicious to offer its Yiddish folk music Sept. 29

Yiddish folk music band Yid Vicious will perform Sept. 29 at Ripon College as part of the Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon series.

A pre-concert talk will begin at 6:15 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

The award-winning band was formed in 1995. Band members are Daithi Wolfie on fiddle, Geoff Brady on percussion, Greg Smith on clarinet, Kia Karlen on horn and accordion, David Spies on tuba, and Matt Appleby on guitar. The group has released five CDs and received numerous Madison-area music awards.

3. Get to know your local farmers at family-style dinner

Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts will host a Farm Dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 29 at the center, 51 Sheboygan St., Fond du Lac.

The dinner is held so community members can share a meal and get to know the farmer who grew their food.

The event begins with a cocktail hours. A family-style meal will be served from 7 to 9 p.m. There also will be live music to enjoy.

4. Fond du Lac library hosts fall festival Sept. 30

Fond du Lac Public Library will hold a Fall Family Festival from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 30 at the Denevue Shelter at Lakeside Park.

There will be activities for kids as well as opportunities for the adults to meet with representatives of local organizations. Attendees can vote for their favorite pumpkin and enter a raffle.

5. Show off your inner lumberjack at Ledge Games

The Ledge Games are set to run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 at Red Cabin at Green Acres Bar & Supper Club, W2701 Fourth Street Road, Fond du Lac.

The lumberjack-style games are designed for competitors of all sizes and abilities to compete. Events include caber toss, hammer toss, archery, keg toss, speed chop and axe throw.

Competition divisions are: Men’s, Women’s and Mentor’s (55 and older).

Funds raised during this event go toward scholarships for students studying in the engineering, manufacturing, technology and related fields.
