Councilman McKee-Rodriguez releases campaign rap music video

Jalen McKee-Rodgriguez once recorded a parody rap math lesson using Nicki Minaj’s “Yikes” on TikTok, changing the lyrics to teach his students about the Pythagorean Theorem.

With a little over two weeks away from his first shot at retaining his East Side City Council seat, it should come as no surprise that the former math teacher is again picking up the microphone and rapping over another Minaj track.

On Wednesday, McKee-Rodriguez, 26, released a short campaign video on social media that details his accomplishments at City Hall and his vision for a possible second term.

DIG DEEPER: Jalen McKee-Rodriguez looks to make history by keeping District 2 seat

McKee-Rodriguez, who is rapping over the new Minaj and Ice Spice “Princess Diana” song, also addresses his critics, who have cast him as out of touch with District 2 residents and their needs.

“If we keep it a stack, insiders pressed ‘cause we don’t heed demands,” McKee-Rodriguez raps. “They be chatting, I don’t give a damn. District by my side and I know who I am. Need some news, they gon’ hit up my (insta) gram. In my face they gon’ act like a fan. Big head if you got your head gassed, teacher so I give ‘em a pass.”

McKee-Rodriguez, a former math teacher at Sam Houston High School and Madison High School, hopes to keep his District 2 council seat in the May 6 election. He is the seventh person to hold his office since 2014, the most turnover of any of the council’s 10 districts.

McKee-Rodriguez is facing nine challengers.

He explains at the beginning of the video that he used to write song parodies to enhance his lessons and meet his students “where they were.”

“Now that I’m elected, I don’t know, it’s a little spicy, a little provocative,” said McKee-Rodriguez. “ It gets people going.”

In the song, McKee-Rodriguez touts his ability to direct funding to District 2 for streets, community centers and other community assets. The video also features Councilwoman Teri Castillo, who is wearing boxing gloves. Castillo is seeking re-election in District 5.

In the video, McKee-Rodriguez also boasts of his endorsement from his favorite rapper, Nicki Minaj

In 2021, the popular rapper called on her fans to vote for McKee-Rodriguez after he shared a birthday message to her from the dais at San Antonio’s City Hall. The video was later posted on Twitter and went viral.

“A true KING omg,” Minaj told her 23.3 million followers. She refers to her fans as Barbz. “Barbz must assemble to vote for this great man at every election he’s apart of. Barbz ACTIVATE!!!! If you can’t vote in his city, MOVE THERE!”
