Eagles, S Terrell Edmunds agree to 1-year deal: Source

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing safety Terrell Edmunds to a one-year deal, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What Edmunds brings to Philadelphia

The Eagles have a major hole at safety after losing C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps in free agency. Edmunds gives the Eagles an experienced starter with a first-round pedigree and a track record of production, and he just turned 26 in January.

It’s nearly two weeks into free agency and Edmunds is signing a one-year deal for the second consecutive year, so expectations should be set accordingly. But he was one of the safeties remaining on the market, giving the Eagles needed experience at the biggest hole on the roster. — Berman

Where does he fit?

If the Eagles were forced to play a game next week, Edmunds would presumably start at safety alongside Reed Blankenship, who impressed in his cameo as an undrafted rookie last season. Of course, there’s a long time between now and the real Week 1, so Edmunds fills an important role in giving the team cover as a patchwork player at a position of significant need.

We expect the cost to be relatively minimal — he lingered on the market for over a month last offseason before re-signing with the Steelers for $2.5 million — and Edmunds offers theoretical upside given his youth. This feels extremely reasonable. — Wulf
