England’s 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign kicks off in a huge match in Marseille which should in theory decide which team will finish top of Pool D and get the more favourable quarter final.
Steve Borthwick’s team haven’t had the best preparation for a World Cup year, sacking former manager Eddie Jones just 10 months before the start of the tournament.
The 2019 World Cup runners up won just two of their five Six Nations matches for the third year in a row and won just one of their four World Cup warm up matches, which included their first ever defeat to a Tier 2 nation following defeat at home to Fiji.
England remain the only northern hemisphere side to ever lift the Webb Ellis Cup heading in to 2023 edition.
Their build up for this year’s competition has been further marred by the loitering four match ban that captain and talisman Owen Farrell is currently serving following his red card in the warm up match against Wales at Twickenham last month, leaving him out of the first two matches in France.
Fortunately, fly half is one of their positions with the most depth, and Borthwick has opted to give a starting berth to the capable hands of George Ford.
Argentina travel to France having lost four of their last five matches against Tier 1 opposition.
But Michael Cheika’s side have posted away wins over Australia, England and New Zealand over the past 13 months and will fancy themselves against strongly against a potentially fragile England side.
This Los Pumas squad is arguably the strongest they have ever had, and having previously reached the semi finals of the World Cup on just one occasion back in 2015, this year, with a probable match against Australia or Wales in the last eight, they could repeat that feat.
