Japan will acquire 50 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with extended range missiles in a possible US$104 million foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) advised the US Congress of the possible sale on 28 August.

The potential sale also includes 50 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with extended range, JASSM anti-jam global positioning system receivers, training missiles, missile containers, munitions support, spare parts, and technical support.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region,” the DSCA statement said.

“The proposed sale will improve Japan’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing stand-off capability via advanced, long-range strike systems for employment on Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter aircraft including but not limited to the F-15J.”

Lockheed Martin will be selected as the principal contractor and the proposed sale would not require US government or contractor representatives to be assigned to Japan.

The Japan Air Self Defense Force operates 155 Mitsubishi F-15J Eagle twin-engine, single-seat, all-weather air superiority fighters and 45 F-15DJ two-seater aircraft, as of 2020.
