Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe to host Metro FM Music Awards

  • Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe will host the Metro FM Music Awards when they take place in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, next month.
  • The Metro FM Music Awards take place on Saturday, 6 May, at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga and will be live broadcast on SABC 1 (DStv 191) and streamed on SABC+ and Metro FM’s YouTube channel.
  • The last staging of the awards, in 2017, was marred by claims of corruption by late musician Riky Rick during his acceptance speech.

Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe will host the star-studded and esteemed Metro FM Music Awards (MMA23) when they take place for the first time after a five-year hiatus next month.

Per a statement, the decision to appoint Kganyago and Maboe as the hosts is based on “their skills as sought-after hosts who are able to carry events of this calibre”.

“The two presenters exude class and high energy, elements that embody the prestigious Metro FM Awards,” the statement continued.

The Metro FM Music Awards take place on Saturday, 6 May, at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

“I am absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to be entrusted with the role of co-hosting the prestigious Metro FM Music Awards 2023 alongside the incredibly talented Katlego Maboe,” Kganyago says in the statement.

“As a long-standing member of the Metro FM family with seven years of experience and with a solid background in live television and broadcasting, I understand the significance of this event, and I am confident in my ability to deliver an exceptional experience for South Africa’s music fans.”

The return of the music awards was announced in January. It was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, 29 April however, in March, the SABC announced that it was postponed to May due to “circumstances beyond our control.”

There will be a live broadcast on the awards show on SABC 1 (DStv 191) and streamed on SABC+ and Metro FM’s YouTube channel.

“The MMAs are a true highlight of the year for music lovers, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it all,” Kganyago says. “Together with Katlego Maboe, we promise to bring an unparalleled level of class, energy and excitement to the stage.”

The last staging of the awards, in 2017, was marred by claims of corruption by late musician Riky Rick during his acceptance speech, where he slammed radio stations for the alleged lack of support for local musicians and claimed local record companies bought awards.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be chosen as the host of the Metro FM Music Awards 2023,” Maboe says in the statement. “It is an incredible honour to be part of such a prestigious event, and I am super excited to be hosting alongside the talents Lerato Kganyago.”

“I am looking forward to celebrating the best of South African music with all the amazing artists, producers and fans. I can’t wait!”
