Mikel Arteta has said the injuries to both Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba need further assessment, with the pair being substituted in Arsenal’s Europa League defeat by Sporting CP on Thursday.
Tomiyasu, 24, had to be replaced in the 9th minute after injuring himself while lunging in for a tackle on Francisco Trincao. He was replaced by Ben White.
Saliba, 21, was taken off in the 21st minute. The centre-back, who has been key for Arteta throughout the season, was replaced by Rob Holding.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 4-1 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace, Arteta is still concerned about the injury to Tomiyasu but is hopeful Saliba’s will be less of an issue.
He said: We don’t know (how bad Tomiyasu’s injury is).
“The doctor is assessing. We have one assessment and I think they need to have another assessment tomorrow. It’s not looking good. Tomi is not one to exaggerate things. He was really concerned straight away and we are concerned.”
“We hope Willy (Saliba) is going to be better news. Again we have to wait to tomorrow to get a better picture.”
A brace from Bukayo Saka and goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Granit Xhaka helped Arsenal secure all three points at the Emirates over Palace on Sunday.
The result sees Arsenal go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City, who are second.
