Rain dump to cause wet weekend in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia

Eastern Australia is in for a wet weekend with widespread rain and thunderstorms to fall across NSW, with rain also affecting Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and parts of Western Australia.

The end of this week and across the weekend will see a series of cold fronts and low pressure troughs bring in showers over a huge area of the south and eastern states.

The wet weather will begin in southern WA, SA, Victoria and Tasmania on Thursday with only a few light showers.

However, that will expand with showers and storms spreading further north into NSW from Friday and into southern Queensland on Saturday “as an upper-level trough pushes north and interacts with a feed of tropical moisture”, according to WeatherZone’s Ben Domensino.

“Forecast models suggest that rain will become more widespread and heavier over NSW and parts of southern Qld on the weekend as the upper-level trough transitions into a cut-off low above eastern Australia,” he said.

Parts of eastern NSW are expected to see more than 100mm of rain by Monday, with the heaviest rain to occur on Saturday and Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting that Sydney will see up to 30mm fall on Saturday and up to 60mm to fall on Sunday.

Temperatures are also set to plummet from their 27C degree maximum on Friday to 20C degrees on Sunday.

There are concerns for NSW’s south coast and mountain ranges due to “a focused stream of onshore winds could produce more than 100mm of rain and possibly more than 200mm in some places”, Mr Domensino said.

Severe weather warnings and flood watches could be issued by the Bureau if weather worsens.

Queensland is not expected to receive nearly as much rain with only 6mm predicted to fall in Brisbane on Sunday with the slight chance of a thunderstorm.

Melbourne will experience the worst of its showers on Friday with 1-6mm falling, with showers to continue on Saturday but to a lesser extent.

Adelaide is in for a dreary weekend with a high chance of showers over Friday and Saturday and a lower chance into the beginning of next week.
