Top-seeded South Carolina took care of No. 2 seed Maryland in an 86-75 Elite Eight victory Monday to punch its ticket to the women’s Final Four. Here’s what you need to know:
- South Carolina advances to its third consecutive Final Four and fifth under coach Dawn Staley.
- The team improved to 36-0 on the year, a program record for wins in a single season.
- Aliyah Boston led South Carolina with 22 points (10-14 FG) and 10 rebounds.
- The Gamecocks will face No. 2 seed Iowa on Friday with a trip to the national title game on the line.
South Carolina weathered a strong start from Maryland early, falling behind 21-15 in the first quarter but outscoring the Terrapins 23-9 in the second. The Gamecocks’ lead was as large as 19 points with 2:43 remaining before Maryland ended the game on an 8-0 run. Terrapins guard Diamond Miller led all scorers with 24 points, while South Carolina’s Zia Cooke and Brea Beal buoyed Boston’s performance with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
South Carolina becomes the 14th team to ever reach the Final Four undefeated after Monday’s win, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Nine of the previous 13 went on to win the national title.
