The Twelve: Series two starring Sam Neill, Tasma Walton and Frances O’Connor shooting in Perth and York
August 31, 2023
Sam Neill, Frances O’Connor and WA-based Tasma Walton are just some of the big names shooting season two of award-winning Binge drama The Twelve across the State.
The series, which dominated this year’s TV Week Logie Awards, will be WA’s biggest ever production, bringing together one of the largest ensembles of any series produced in Australia — it will film mostly around Perth and the Wheatbelt town of York for the next five months.
As well as the three top-tier names, 11 Perth-raised or based stars will feature in the series, which commenced filming in Perth, York and the Wheatbelt on August 21.
For Walton, who has been based in WA with husband Rove McManus for the several years, the production has proved a blessing as it films just 15 minutes from her home.
“The production is such a gift to people with families; to be able to be home, to be around your extended family unit and to be able to do your work,” she said.
“Last night I got to go home. My daughter was still up and I could put her to bed.
“Often, you are away for an extended period of time. And the hours are not kind to families. So it is such a gift to be able to be in your home State.”
As well as WA-raised Walton, the production stars Frances O’Connor, who also grew up in the State.
Other locals joining the acclaimed clast include Ladies in Black star Luke Pegler, Indigenous actor Nelson Baker and In Our Blood’s Adriano Cappelletta.
Other Perth-based actors include Greg McNeill, Suesha Rana, Brad Francis, Isabelle Basen, ex-McLeod’s Daughters’ star Myles Pollard, Mystery Road: Origin star Caroline Brazier and Steve Le Marquand.
“We have wanted to produce in WA for a long time, so it’s great to be here creating the next instalment of the award winning The Twelve, with over 150 West Australian cast and crew, and hundreds of extras, helping to make it happen,” Alison Hurbert-Burns, executive director of commissioning content at Binge, said.
As well as the well-regarded WA talent, other big names include Wentworth’s Kris McQuade, Animal Kingdom star Anthony Hayes, Home and Away’s Amy Mathews, Shareena Clanton, who appeared in The Cry, Shantaram star Fayssal Bazzi and ex-Neighbours actress Sharon Johal, who famously took part in the 2022 season of The Block, alongside husband Ankur.
“Screenwest is thrilled to have so many high-profile actors and incredible producers working in Western Australia alongside our WA cast and crew,” Screenwest CEO Rikki Lea Bestall said.
“The Twelve is a significant opportunity for our local screen industry and we are excited to be working with Binge, Warner Bros International Television Production Australia and Easy Tiger to produce a premium Australian series in WA.”
Details of the second season are still being kept under wraps, but the series will see a whole new case take centre stage, and introduce viewers to the perspectives of 12 new jurors presiding over a murder case, with the action centred around the Wheatbelt.
Neill will reprise his role as Brett Colby QC, with O’Connor playing Meredith Nelson-Moore SC in a high profile murder case — Walton plays one of twelve jurors.
She says filming in Western Australia is a boon for local creatives and crew.
“For most of us, we had to leave to go over East as kids to actually make a career…and have a screen industry to go to.
“So it’s excited to see there’s this active push, to create a screen industry in this state. We have the talent, we have the crew, we have the locations.
