Waterfront Wednesdays back for 2023; music fans call the series a ‘gift’
The weather is slowly beginning to heat up and so is the music.WFPK Waterfront Wednesday is back on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Louisville.The free concert series takes place the last Wednesday of each month from April until September. It’s a partnership between Waterfront Park, Louisville Public Media and sponsors.At the first show of the new season, the Big Four Lawn was filled with music lovers, enjoying three different acts, playing a variety of music.No tickets are needed. Waterfront Wednesday has been free since it began more than two decades ago.The only drawback to attending in the past was limited parking. Event organizers said they’ve opened thousands of new spaces at a nearby stadium.“One of the best things we have this year is we have a lot of new parking over at Lynn Family Stadium that we haven’t had in the past. It’s going to be only a couple blocks walk at the most to get here,” said event coordinator John Grantz.In addition to music, food is a crowd-pleaser. Ramiro Gandara is serving up his best for a fifth straight year in his unique food truck.“This is my way of thinking. So, you have 50,000 people on the lawn; which truck are you going to see first? The one with the biggest sugar skull. Am I right?” said Gandara, the owner of Ramiro’s Cantina.New this year at Waterfront Wednesday is a well-staffed Kids Zone. It’s filled with activities for those little concertgoers who might get bored with what’s happening on stage.Parents like J.K. McKnight tell WLKY News it’s a perfect place for kids to have fun while adults listen to music.When we were coming here, my kids said, “‘Dad, so this means when we go to concerts with you, we actually have a place to go and have fun and we’re not trying to take you away?’ I’m like, yes, that’s what it means,” McKnight said.Some music lovers just can’t get enough of this summer music series.Denise Crain has been listening to music along the waterfront for 25 years.Crain is confident Louisville has one of the best music scenes in the country.“We just feel invigorated by being able to come out and listen to free music every last Wednesday all summer long. It’s just a gift,” Crain said.
