As the last days of August slipped away, I took a walk down to Lake Michigan. I passed the familiar houses, getting grander in scope and scale as I made my way to the water. Along the way, I listened to the wind whisper through the green leaves of the trees, knowing that soon they would just be bare branches.
At one point on my walk I found myself in what I like to call a tree tunnel. Trees on both sides of the road arched up and over the concrete and the power lines to mingle in the sunshine far beyond my reach. While I looked up at these tall trees, snippets of conversations and news headlines tumbled through my mind. I found myself smiling at the idea that the tree on my left was the political left, and the tree on my right the political right.
