Announcements: Accountability for the Crime of Aggression … – EJIL: Talk!

1. Accountability for the Crime of Aggression Conferences. Registration is now open for twin conferences organised by the Section of International Law and International Relations of the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna and the Department of International Law of the Faculty of Law, Charles University (Prague) focusing on current legal developments in the enforcement of the crime of aggression. The Vienna ‘Conference on Amendments: Towards one Comprehensive Jurisdictional Regime for all Crimes Within the Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court’, 6-7 October 2023, will focus on amendments to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. These concern, most prominently, the conditions for the exercise of jurisdiction over the crime of aggression, but also proposals to broaden the subject-matter jurisdiction of the Court and to close gaps in the Statute’s enforcement structure. To join, register via int-law {at} univie.ac(.)at until 24 September 2023. The Prague Conference ‘Towards Accountability for the Crime of Aggression Committed Against Ukraine’, 10-11 November 2023, will discuss the possible categories of a special tribunal for the prosecution of the crime of aggression against Ukraine and their implications, particularly on the (non)applicability of immunities from foreign criminal jurisdiction and other important aspects. Symposium on International Law and Maldives Navigating Geopolitics, Trade and Sovereignty. The Faculty of Shariah and Law, Villa College, Maldives is hosting the “Symposium on International Law and Maldives: Navigating Geopolitics, Trade and Sovereignty” on 20-21 December 2023 in Malé, Maldives. This symposium aims to provide a platform for scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to engage in thoughtful discussions regarding the legal dimensions of the Maldives’ engagement with international law. The Symposium will delve into the multifaceted intersections of the Maldives’ legal landscape and international law. The Maldives, known for its unique geographical and cultural characteristics, holds a significant place in the international arena yet remains an unexplored territory in the Asian literature on international law.
