Ben Platt avoids nepo baby question and seemingly cuts interview SHORT while promoting Theater Camp – Daily Mail

Ben Platt wasn’t a big fan of being questioned about nepotism and seemingly cut a recent Rolling Stone interview short while discussing his new comedy titled, Theater Camp.

The Tony winner, 29 – who is currently engaged to Booksmart actor Noah Galvin, also 29 – both tackled a leading role and co-wrote the latest project which officially released in theaters on Friday, July 14. 

At one point during the Rolling Stone interview which was also published on Friday, the interviewer brought up the 2022 New York Magazine nepo baby cover, which various stars appeared on, including Ben, who is the son of film producer, Marc Platt.

He is known for being behind movies such as The Little Mermaid (2023), Legally Blonde (2001), and the upcoming live-action adaptation of Wicked, starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Michelle Yeoh. 

When asked what his ‘response’ to the cover is and what he made ‘of that whole discourse,’ Ben immediately shut down the topic by stating, ‘We’re going to skip right over that if we can.’ 

Dailymail.com has reached out to Ben’s representative for comment.  

According to the outlet, Platt’s publicist suddenly jumped in to swerve the focus only on Theater Camp.  

Following a few more questions that were not related to nepotism, his publicist once again stepped in to end the interview which was only halfway conducted. 

Directly before bringing up the 2022 New York Magazine cover which was published late last year in December, the interviewer asked Ben about growing up with ‘parents in the industry’ and how it played into his own ‘career ambitions.’ 

The Broadway performer answered, ‘I would say, in this film, it’s more about that my siblings all did musical theater at The Adderley School. And so when I was old enough to go, I just really wanted to be like them, and I looked up to all of them.’ 

His older brother, Jonah Platt, is also an actor in the industry, and has starred in projects such as Being The Ricardos (2021). 

The Pitch Perfect alum further expressed that his parents ‘gave us the opportunity to pursue whatever we wanted to pursue’ and added ‘I think I had the opportunity that a lot of people don’t have, which is that I was allowed to get bitten by a theater bug. They let me try what I wanted to try.’ 

‘The fact that I was in a family where we were listening to show tunes in the car, and all my siblings also love musical theater and we got to bond over it together, it was a cool thing and not like something to be ashamed of.’ 

Ben added, ‘I think I owe a lot to that upbringing, and obviously musical theater brought me to my potential husband. So I certainly owe a lot to the openness and the artistic kind of freedom that was in my household.’  

Also during the interview, Ben had the chance to open up about the comedic film, Theater Camp, which released on Friday. 

The movie not only stars Platt, but also Molly Gordon, his fiance Noah Galvin, Jimmy Tatro, Ayo Edebiri, and Patti Harrison. 

The premise follows, ‘The eccentric staff of a rundown theater camp in upstate New York must band together with the beloved founder’s bro-y son to keep the camp afloat,’ per an official IMDB synopsis.   

Ben co-wrote the screenplay with Noah, as well as Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, who both directed the film as well. Upon its recent release, Theater Camp currently has an audience score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. 

While talking to Rolling Stone, he revealed that some parts of the movie were actually completely ‘improvised’ although he couldn’t give an exact amount of how much was from improvisation. 

‘It’s hard to say. There’s a ton of improv throughout, it was certainly very heavily outlined. And every scene, if not written was at least, like, the directives were very clear,’ the Emmy-award winner stated. 

‘And there was a list of all jokes, from larger bibles and lists, and it’s just the ones that hit. But particularly the classes and some of the more free-form sections in the movie are fully improvised.’ 

The last question that was asked before the interview came to a sudden end revolved around Ben’s wedding plans with fiance, Noah Galvin. The two were confirmed to be dating in 2020 and became engaged last year in November 2022.

‘We’re zeroing in on the big things and then trying to plant the flag far enough out that we can kind of take a little breather,’ Platt revealed.

‘I think we are loving the being able to call each other fiancé, and obviously you only get that one time. So I don’t think there’s any rush.’ 

He added, ‘But we’re zeroing in on a time and a place and having all the Jewish mother discussions that go along with having a giant Jewish family and figuring out what our version of that is gonna look like.’ 

Ben began his successful career as a child by starring in productions such as The Sound Of Music (2006). 

He later appeared in the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen from 2015 until 2017, which earned him a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical and became the youngest solo winner to win the award when he was 23-years-old.

Ben has also tackled roles in both television and film, such as appearing in the Pitch Perfect franchise. He also played the role of Payton in the series titled The Politician, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Last month in June, he received a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Leo Frank in Parade.
