Only 1% of railway network covered by Kavach in India
The Kavach system, an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, has only been implemented on a small portion of India’s railway network. Currently, it covers 1,465 route kilometers and 121 locomotives in the South Central Railway zone. The system is designed to prevent trains from passing red signals and automatically activate the brakes if the driver fails to do so. Implementation is ongoing in other zones, and the goal is to deploy Kavach on 6,000 route kilometers. The cost for track side signals and station equipment is 50 lakh per route kilometer, while the cost for Kavach equipment on locomotives is 70 lakh per locomotive. The system is being prioritized in high-density areas with a higher chance of human errors.
Tambaram Sanatorium railway station is a commuter’s nightmare
The Tambaram Sanatorium railway station in Chennai has become a nightmare for commuters due to issues such as waterlogging, non-functional escalators, locked bathrooms, and drunk individuals on the platforms. Despite renovation work last year to prevent waterlogging, the subways at the station remain inundated. The leaky roofs and cracked tiles worsen the situation during rain. The construction of a foot-over-bridge to improve connectivity has also been delayed, leaving commuters frustrated. Railway officials have promised to address the issues, but their promises have yet to be fulfilled. Citizen-activists are calling for disciplinary action and oversight to ensure the completion of the foot-over-bridge.
Running behind schedule, this railway Ramlila forever hit
The North Central Railway Ramlila Committee in Prayagraj, India, has begun its annual performance of the Ramlila, a reenactment of the Hindu epic, Ramayana. The Ramlila, which has been performed by railway employees and their children since 1967, takes place on the premises of the DRM office of the Prayagraj Division of NCR. The delayed start of the Ramlila is due to the heavy railway passenger rush during the Navratri festival and the upcoming demands of the Diwali season.
