Chelsea vs Manchester City predictions

By the time this match kicks off on Sunday, Chelsea fans may have just got their breath back after an extraordinary encounter six days prior.

Their 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur had everything: five disallowed goals, two red cards, a penalty and plenty more drama in between.

It was a remarkable affair and while the scoreline was ultimately comfortably in Chelsea’s favour, the Blues could easily have been embarrassed.

Despite a two-man advantage from the 55th minute onwards, it took Mauricio Pochettino’s men 20 minutes to score their all-important second goal.

And although Nicolas Jackson notched two more to complete his hat-trick in second-half stoppage time, Spurs had chances to equalise at 2-2 before that.

The north Londoners continued to defend high up the pitch despite their numerical deficit, and for a while it seemed like Chelsea did not have the guile to find a way through.

Still, Pochettino will hope that a thumping victory over his former club will prove to be a turning point for Chelsea after a stuttering start to the season.

However, the fixture computer has handed them a difficult run over the next six weeks or so. After the November international break, Chelsea must face Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United.

Before all that is the visit of Manchester City to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. This will be a stern examination of Chelsea’s credentials as they attempt to close the gap to the top four.

📝 Chelsea vs Manchester City betting tips

Manchester City are much further ahead than Chelsea and that should be borne out by the scoreline on Sunday.

Manchester City to win – 3/4 (bet365)

In an ominous sign for the rest of the division, Manchester City are top of the Premier League table once more.

They rose to the summit of the standings thanks to a 6-1 demolition of Bournemouth last time out. Tottenham’s defeat by Chelsea then denied Ange Postecoglou’s charges the chance to retake first place.

Pep Guardiola’s side will not budge easily from here. Not only do they have the most points in the league, they also rank first for goals scored (28), goals conceded (eight), goal difference (+20) and expected goals against (8.1).

Interestingly they are only fourth for expected goals, behind Liverpool, Newcastle and their upcoming opponents Chelsea.

Still, their combination of quality and experience means City deserve to be strong favourites to become the first team in English football history to win four titles in a row.

Guardiola’s team have dominated this fixture of late. Each of their last six meetings with Chelsea have ended in victory. Two of those games were at Stamford Bridge, with City winning 1-0 on both occasions.

Chelsea are a team in transition and there is a reason they trail City by 12 points already. Follow the form book in this one by tipping the champions to come out on top.

Under 2.5 goals – Evens (bet365)

Control will be the order of the day for Manchester City this weekend. That is the approach they have taken on their last two visits to this part of west London.

On January 5 this year, City focused on holding Chelsea at arm’s length before Riyad Mahrez popped up with the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute.

There were only five shots on target in the entire match but that was not entirely by accident, with Guardiola instructing his team to keep the ball away from their opponents as much as possible.

The frontline that Chelsea fields this weekend will be made up of players who are capable of springing forward quickly in transition – not least former Manchester City star Raheem Sterling and Monday’s hat-trick hero Jackson.

That will no doubt persuade Guardiola to double down on his strategy. For instance, we will probably see Jack Grealish start ahead of Jeremy Doku on the left, as the City boss prioritises control over chaos.

This will be an intriguing game but goals could be relatively few in west London.

Erling Haaland to score any time – 10/11 (bet365)

Erling Haaland was an injury doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Young Boys, but the Norway international was considered fit enough to start.

Haaland struck twice in the 3-0 win that secured Manchester City’s place in the knockout phase with two group games to spare.

Needless to say, the Premier League’s top scorer will be included in the XI when City head to London this weekend.

Haaland already has 15 goals to his name this term – not bad for a player who was considered out of form at one point. He has achieved that tally in just 15 appearances in all competitions.

Haaland could consider himself a little unfortunate to be overlooked for the 2022/23 Ballon d’Or, but that is a prize he is bound to win one day.

Another goal in a big game on Sunday would do his cause no harm whatsoever.
