President Xi Jinping, in his address, acknowledged the notable advancements in Belt and Road cooperation between the two nations. He particularly emphasized the substantial progress made in establishing the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network. In order to enhance infrastructure connectivity and transit transportation cooperation, Xi called for concerted efforts on both sides. It is his vision for Nepal to become a land-linked nation as soon as possible from its current status as a landlocked country.

Xi Jinping also extended China’s commitment to strengthen multilateral coordination with Nepal, with a focus on safeguarding their common interests, as well as those of other developing countries. He also expressed desire to cultivate a global community with a shared future for humanity.

In response, Prime Minister Prachanda reaffirmed the strong and friendly ties between Nepal and China. He emphasis Nepal’s steadfast adherence to the one-China policy, firmly acknowledging Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of China’s sovereign territory. Prime Minister Prachanda also made a resolute declaration that Nepal would not permit its territory to be used by any force seeking to undermine China’s sovereignty and security, reiterating its policy to keep the Tibetan refugees on a short leash.

Prime Minister Prachanda commended China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and pledged Nepal’s active participation in BRI projects. He also expressed Nepal’s commitment to the construction of the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network, emphasizing its potential to contribute to regional development and cooperation. According to him, the Hangzhou Asian Games would foster mutual understanding and friendship among Asian nations and be a resounding success.

Nepal’s growing reliance on China has already rejigged the geo-politics in the region with India also keen to reassert its influence in the tiny Himalayan kingdom. China’s economic opportunities however, comes with political obligations that experts say must be keenly managed by Kathmandu at the risk of its nationhood.
