David Letterman follows Lana Del Rey’s lead and works a real job – New York Post

He’d surely make the “Top Ten List” for least likely to work at a grocery store.

A week after singer Lana Del Rey moonlighted as a waitress at the Waffle House, David Letterman decided to apparently ditch his entertainer ways as well and work a shift bagging groceries in Iowa on Friday.

An image of the late-night legend’s apparent “new gig” is currently blowing up on Facebook.

In the jarring photo posted by the Hy-Vee grocery store, the 76-year-old former “Late Night with David Letterman” host can be seen clad in an apron and his own name tag while inspecting a can of Campbell’s soup at an outlet in Des Moines.

“You never know who you’ll bump into while shopping the aisles at Hy-Vee,” read the caption.

Thankfully, it didn’t appear as if Letterman was stocking shelves to make ends meet.

video uploaded to the comedian’s Instagram account Sunday shows Letterman informing the Hy-Vee manager that he has “spent a considerable amount of my life in a grocery store in Indianapolis” and that it was “the last of the singular, independent owned grocery stores and I loved it.”

“If I can give something back to the marketing community, I would like to do that,” declared the TV icon, before quipping, “but I don’t have all day, of course.”

The grocery boss then ties Letterman’s apron and it’s off to the races.

The funnyman is seen bagging groceries, sampling various food items — including raw minestrone soup from an open can and a loose gumball off the floor — and announcing over the intercom that celery was free for “today and today only.”

Along with giving back to the community, the Indianan was also promoting the Hy-Vee Indy Car race in Des Moines.

The entertainer had attended the event over the weekend to watch Christian Lundgaard drive the No. 45 race car, which he co-owns via his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team.

Letterman’s not the first celebrity to work a blue-collar stint post-fame.

Earlier this month, Grammy-winning singer Lana Del Rey was spotted serving up grub at a Waffle House in Alabama, although the reasons for her food industry foray remain unclear.

Perhaps it’s only so long before we see Jerry Seinfeld bussing tables at Fuddruckers.
