Do Stino Le Thwenny have the first genuinely interesting local rap album of the year? – SNL24

What the streets need: It’s debatable but this is a decent listen.

For the most part, the main thing to happen in local hip hop this year was the passing of rapper AKA and his posthumous release of Mass Country.

The local rap scene has been stagnant to put it lightly. It isn’t exactly clear what everyone is waiting for, but the months dwindle on, and decent releases are few and far between.

Enter Stino Le Thwenny a hip-hop duo from Bloemfontein. They have been making music since 2016 and have collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Kwesta, K.O, Khuli Chana, Major League DJs, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai and Maglera Doe Boy. They are known for their authentic and original sound that reflects their hometown and culture.

The hardworking duo released their debut album, You Want Some More, to keep their fans warm and moving this winter. The album features powerhouse artists like, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, Tyler ICU, Khuli Chana, Maglera Doe Boy, and Caask Asid, among others.

The duo shared their track list on social media and received positive response from their fans.

The lead single Karika, featuring Khuli Chana flaunts their harmonised amapiano rap style. When asked about the inspiration behind You Want Some More, the duo say that it’s their fans who inspire them. They felt that it was time for South Africa to hear what was being cooked in the Free State and that their sound needs to be included in local discussions around refreshing rhythms.

Working with South Africa’s powerhouse artists was an honour for Stino Le Thwenny.

Some of them were physically in the studio with the duo, while others had to work remotely due to different schedules and distances, but this doesn’t impede how this album hits.

Working with their idols and people who make music they love was an exciting feeling for them and they were amped about the album from the very beginning. However, it was also nerve wracking to work with people they had idolized for so long.

Overall, the journey of creating the album was beautiful. When asked about what they were most excited about for this project and what people should look forward to, the duo say that they placed an emphasis on the variety of music that people would hear on project.

They firmly believe that all 16 songs will resonate with their audience and plans for accompanying visuals and performances are on the cards.
