Dramatic end to three-hour police chase

Police began their pursuit after spotting a black Holden Commodore sedan in Lalor Park about 9am following earlier reports of suspicious activity on Thursday morning.

The man had allegedly been seen swapping the cars number plates an hour earlier and refused to stop when approached by police.

Police pursued the Commodore as it drove east through multiple suburbs before calling for additional resources including a Polair chopper, the Highway Patrol Command and members of the Raptor Squad dedicated to fighting bikie-gang crime.

Officers were able to slow the car down as it approached Gibbon and Old Windsor roads in Winston Hills about 10.40am.

When a senior constable, attached to the Raptor Squad, attempted to take grab onto the slowing vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated, and the officer was flung across the bonnet of a nearby police vehicle.

Police discharged a number of shots towards the Commodore before it exited onto the North West T-way.

The Raptor Squad officers was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment and was later released.

A short time later, the driver pulled over and a man, 21, fled the car before immediately being arrested by police.

He was taken to Blacktown Police Station but was released without charge.

The driver sped away from the scene, driving north on Old Windsor Road towards the M7 travelling west, before continuing onto the M4 and then joining the Great Western Highway.

Road spikes were deployed unsuccessfully at Springwood about 11.15am, and the car continued to travel west on the Great Western Highway with Polair monitoring.

After reaching the Blue Mountains, the Commodore was held up by a queue of traffic, performing a U-turn to avoid being caught by police and heading back east.

However, specialist operatives were able to perform a high-risk vehicle stop just before midday on the Great Western Highway at Katoomba.

The 21-year-old driver was tasered by police before being arrested.

He was assessed by paramedics before being taken to Katoomba Hospital.

He was later taken to Katoomba Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences.

He was charged with police pursuit and refusing to stop, driving dangerously, driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, driving recklessly/furiously or speeding in a manner that is dangerous, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and dishonestly obtaining property by deception.

The 21-year-old was refused bail and appeared before Blacktown Local Court on Friday.
