A Detroit man who won a contest for an anti-violence rap video faces felony weapons charges after authorities found a gun and bullets in the vehicle he was a passenger in during a traffic stop in Mount Clemens over the weekend.

Xzavier Spraggins, 21, was arrested by Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies about 1:50 a.m. Sunday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. The charge is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy saw a 2015 black Chevy Impala traveling north on North Gratiot Avenue at a very low speed and with the hazard lights activated. The deputy also heard a loud noise that “sounded like a flat tire” coming from the vehicle.

After the deputy conducted a traffic stop, he saw the driver and two other passengers in the vehicle. He also saw an open backpack on the floorboard of the front passenger seat, investigators said.

When Spraggins moved his leg, the deputy saw appeared to be the rail of an AR style weapon. Authorities said a Diamondback AR-pistol was found in the backpack, along with a 30-round magazine, and over 40 bullets.

“Although the pistol was purchased legally, it was unregistered,” the Macomb Count Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “Additionally, Spraggins does not have a CPL on file.”

Spraggins was taken into custody and housed at the Macomb County Jail, where he was given an interim
bond of $10,000.

According to social media, Spraggins, was a first-place winner of the CITI Camp Positive Rap Video Contest, as part of the Detroit Police Department’s Youth Violence Prevention Initiative in 2016.
