Island genetics firm sponsors music awards – Royal Gazette

A local genetic research company helped to sponsor the Caribbean Music Awards in New York last week.

Carika Weldon, the founder and chief executive of CariGenetics, the company’s chief marketing officer Jodi Covington, as well as branding and marketing manager Devray Denwiddie represented the company at the event on August 31.

The awards show, hosted by musician Wyclef Jean, took place at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn and featured performances from many Caribbean artists, including Jada Kingdom, Teddyson John, Dexta Daps and Rupee.

Dr Weldon was proud to have been part of an event that celebrated Caribbean culture. “Our sponsorship aligns perfectly with our mission to expand our reach and genetic research database into the Caribbean,” she explained.

“The region is the genetic melting pot of the world and offers the best solution for tackling the grossly biased medical research industry, which sees 85 per cent of the world’s ethnic diversity overlooked.”

Dr Weldon added that the event was a perfect opportunity to connect with a wide audience and share its vision for a healthier world for people of Caribbean ancestry.

She said: “As we continue to grow, events like the Caribbean Music Awards provide us with a massive platform to introduce our organisation and its mission.

“We are excited about the connections we’ve made and look forward to future collaborations that will help us make significant strides in genetic research for the Caribbean community.”
