Mila O’Brien, this year’s kid governor, was elected by fifth graders across the state who are involved in the program. “I get to speak all across Oklahoma about youth mental health awareness and what we can do to improve the numbers, because we’ve noticed a decline in mental health since COVID started, and I saw that, and I knew I had to make a change,” said O’Brien. O’Brien even had the chance to speak at the Oklahoma state Capitol. She said being the kid governor has given her a sense of confidence. “This has benefited me because I was really scared of speaking in public, and now, I feel a lot more confident, and I can do a lot more,” said O’Brien. The program is free and funded by the Oklahoma Institute of Child Advocacy. A Kid Governor reception will be held alongside former Oklahoma governors next week to help raise money for the program and get more classrooms involved. Ticket information can be found here.
