Krystal Pitt remembered as ‘amazing and caring’ mother after her death 10 days after giving birth to baby boy

Through the fog of the overwhelming grief of losing the mother of their days old baby boy, Brayden Yates still somehow sees a way to help others.

Faced with the prospect of raising his two young children alone, Mr Yates wants the death of his beautiful partner and mother-of-two Krystal Pitt to serve as a reminder to cherish every moment with their loved ones.

Ms Pitt, 24, gave birth to her second child, a son, four weeks premature just over a fortnight ago.

Ten days later, she was dead.

The couple had been lining up at the Noranda post office after visiting their baby boy in the neonatal intensive care unit in Perth Children’s Hospital when Ms Pitt told Mr Yates her chest hurt.

“I had her sit down and then pretty quick, she had a cardiac event,” he said.

Mr Yates called triple-0 before performing CPR and then setting up a defibrillator in a desperate attempt to save her life before the ambulance arrived.

Ms Pitt was then placed into an induced coma.

Her prognosis was initially positive, but quickly declined before she tragically passed away in hospital on Saturday.

It is believed Ms Pitt, who had a pre-existing blood condition, died from blood clots that had formed in her lungs and caused the cardiac arrest.

In the hours before she collapsed, the couple had named their son together at the hospital.

They called him Toby.

“It was obviously something special that we were able to do it together and I’m grateful for that,” Mr Yates said.

The 28-year-old father — who also has a 14-month-old daughter, Aurora, with Krystal — said Toby was progressing and he hoped to have him home soon.

He would like him to be able to attend his mother’s funeral.

In another heartbreaking twist, the couple, who are from York, had only just secured a rental property in Perth a week before Ms Pitt’s medical episode and were busy settling into their new home.

They had applied for more than 40 properties over eight months before securing the house. “We were just about to really start our life together as a family and then all this unfolded,” Mr Yates said.

He said the young parents had always taken great pride in raising their children, and Ms Pitt was a stay-at-home mum while he was the sole-income earner.

“So, for me now, it’s a hard one,” he said.

“I know it’s something that I can do and I’ll do it well. But she’s left me for some big shoes to fill, that’s for sure.”

Mr Yates said he will make sure to tell their children “how amazing and caring she was”.

“I’ve got a heap of videos and photos that she recorded, especially during the first year of my daughter’s life, so I can always share those with her.

“But she was just an amazing and caring woman, she worked in childcare and all the children loved her and the parents loved her.

Mr Yates said Ms Pitt was a “natural mother” and enjoyed passing on knowledge of raising babies with other young mums.

He said his situation showed how important it was to “cherish every moment”.

“The super crazy thing, the day before, we were talking about how precious life was and you never know when your last day will be,” he said.

“You’ve got to live to the fullest.”

Mr Yates’ family is raising funds for Ms Pitts’ funeral, and will also go towards the children’s care.
