K’tan duo on 3.5kg Syabu rap

Kota Kinabalu: Two men from Kelantan, who were charged with trafficking 3,510.5gm of syabu were ordered to enter their defence.
High Court Judicial Commissioner Amelati Parnell in delivering her ruling on Friday, made the order on Liew Choon Ang, 31, and Sim Sun Chhiam, 40.

Unemployed Liew and Sim were jointly charged with trafficking 3,510.5gm of syabu at 12.50am on July 4, 2020 in the OIC room at the passenger inspection branch operations office of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here.
Liew, who also faced another similar charge, was also ordered to enter his defence.
Liew was accused of trafficking another 4, 243.9 gm of syabu at 12.30 am on the same day at the Rapidscan100 scanner machine inspection counter, domestic arrival hall (two), KKIA.
Each charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.

The court fixed Oct 19 and 20 for the accused’s defence.
Counsel for Liew and Sim informed the court that the duo opted to give a sworn statement in their respective defences.

The prosecution had called 13 witnesses at the prosecution’s stage.
Customs Deputy Public Prosecutor Shafiq Mahadi prosecuted.
Liew was represented by counsel Ram Singh, Kimberly Ye and Chen Wen Jye while counsel PJ Perira represented Sim.
Pending the continuation of the trial date, both accused were ordered to be remanded further as the charge against them has no provision for bail.
In another case, a businesswoman was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with cheating a woman of RM72,500.
Mas Kuria pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to cheating Rebecca Sidang of the money as capital payment for the non-existent PPR project in Ranau.
Mas allegedly committed the offence between Nov 25, 2021 and March 11, 2022 here.
She was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution in applying for a case management date proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.
Counsel Ram Singh, Kimberly Ye and Chen Wen Jye representing the accused suggested for a lower bail sum of RM2,000 and submitted that she is a local with permanent address in Keningau and has a business in the district.
Lovely set Oct 5 for case management and released Mas on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
Meanwhile, seven people were penalised for taking drugs.
Khan Jibran, Goh Yun Ming, Leonard Doudilim, David Soong, Majelan Jurin, Mimi Nazirah and Helman Osman pleaded guilty to committing the offence at separate locations here and in Penampang between March 12 and May 3 this year.
Khan was fined RM2,400 or seven months’ jail, Leonard was fined RM2,300 or seven months’ jail while the rest were handed seven months each.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.
