Lotto: What West Aussies spend their Lotto wins on, ahead of Saturday’s $20 million Superdraw

It’s a question many would have been asked at one point, what would you do if you won Lotto?

It’s been a lucky ride for West Australians with 53 Division One winners so far this year, accumulating more than $165 million worth to share.

Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said the common themes with Lotto win splurges are sharing fortunes with family, paying off a mortgage, taking a holiday, or pushing retirement plans forward.

“It never gets old when you are called into Lotterywest’s winner’s room to speak to the latest WA owner of a Division One ticket,” he said.

“But there are times when a winner will come out with something you don’t expect, which always puts a humorous spin on the win.

“We’re hoping we can welcome a few more WA players following Saturday’s $20 million Superdaw.”

Here are some of the most memorable Lotto wins over the years…

Charity the focus — 12 July 2023

After 35 years of going into the draw, a Wanneroo couple claimed a huge $20 million Oz Lotto win after purchasing their ticket from Hocking News.

“The chance to cut back at work is wonderful, but my priority is to give money to charity, we are now in a position to help other people.”

A chomping good win — 6 February 2023

Five friends shared in more than $660,000 after claiming a division one ticket in Saturday Lotto.

“We couldn’t believe we’d finally won after playing Lotto as a group for 12 years,” one of the friends said.

The group revealed they would spend their winnings on new teeth and upgraded cars.

Dream home — 19 October 2021

A Clarkson family of eight switched from renting to living in their dream home after a Saturday Lotto’s $20 million Superdraw win.

Their ticket was purchased from NewsXpress Ocean Keys in Clarkson, turned into a division one prize worth $3.3 million.

“There’s a house we have been looking at, we would park outside and say one day we will live in this house,” they said.

“We have a large family so our first thought was our kids, we have always lived in nice rentals, but it was never our own.”

Catch of the day — September 2017

A fisherman from Northampton who “always catches the biggest fish” out of his friends also had a $1 million Lotto win.

“My friends hate taking me out on their boats as I always catch the biggest fish,” he said.

“With a million bucks in my back pocket I can buy my own tinny now,” he laughed.

Pie and stubby — 18 May 2016

A Midland couple won the Set for Life Prize of $20,000 a month for 20 years, and celebrated their win with “a pie and a stubby”.

The winning ticket was purchased from The Lucky Charm in Midland.

“We can just get in the car and follow our beds. Travel to wherever we want to go. It makes life so much easier, and we don’t need to worry about how we’ll pay our next lot of bills,” they said.

To keep the lucky streak going, purchase your tickets for Saturday’s $20 million Lotto Superdraw, available in-store, online and via the app before 6pm on draw day.
