‘Newcastle are the side Paris Saint-Germain want to be’ – Kylian Mbappe and teammates slated following Champions League humiliation

Paris Saint-Germain have been labelled ‘pathetic’, a ‘disgrace’ and a ‘waste of space’ following their humiliation at the hands of Newcastle.

That is the view of talkSPORT host and ex-Chelsea defender Jason Cundy who has ripped into the Ligue 1 champions after they lost 4-1 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

The French side put on an embarrassing display in Tyneside as Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar all got on the score sheet.

Luis Enrique’s side were reduced to scraps against Eddie Howe‘s men, with PSG suffering one of their worst European nights in recent memory.

In contrast, it was a night of euphoria for the Newcastle faithful, who celebrated their first Champions League win since the 2002/03 season.

Speaking on The Sports Bar, Cundy ripped into Mbappe for deciding to sign a new contract in 2022, while also hitting out at PSG’s mentality.

Cundy said: “Mbappe, he winds his contract down, ‘oh I’ll sign another year’. What are you doing with your career? You’re the best player on the planet – or one of.

“Here’s a question for you, who would he rather play for, Mbappe? The money’s the same, who would he rather play for, Newcastle or PSG? The way the teams are set up.”

His co-cost Jamie O’Hara remarked: “I think Newcastle.”

To which Cundy stated: “It’s a no-brainer. When you think of that team, PSG, who are they?

“They’re a side playing in a league – I know Arsenal lost last night [against French outfit Lens], but that was a one-off.

“But come on, they don’t really get challenged, they come up tonight, and I don’t think they did their homework, I think they underestimated Newcastle.

“Newcastle were on the front foot. Marquinhos, what was he doing? [Gianluigi] Donnarumma, what’s he doing?

“You know what, they absolutely got their backside spanked tonight, and they got exactly what they deserved.

“And this is a club that walks around Europe with nothing to show for it, except for big bank balance, no heart, no desire, nothing in Europe, waste of space.

“Newcastle showed them exactly what hard work and organisation, having a plan from top to bottom, a well run club in the last 18 months, a manager settled – Newcastle are the side that PSG want to be.”

He continued: “You’re talking about apples and pears, because the reason is, Newcastle win Ligue 1. Newcastle are better than PSG.”

Cundy added: “I said this at the beginning, everyone called it the ‘Group of Death’, not one bit! It’s not. Newcastle can win this group. They can qualify.

“Newcastle have got a chance of going deep in this competition, I tell you why, they don’t concede many goals.

“In the Champions League, if you don’t concede goals, you’ve got a chance of doing something in this competition, you have.

“You can keep things tight over two legs in the knockout stages, one chance, one goal, you go through, and they’ve got a chance.

“Congratulations to them, but PSG, it’s pathetic from them, absolutely pathetic. What an absolute disgrace they are as a football club, they’re appalling.”

Newcastle’s win leaves them top of Group F with four points ahead of their double-header against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
