Rachel Riley has binned Manchester United shirt Ryan Giggs gave her as she threatens to walk from club over Mason Greenwood
Rachel Riley has ditched a Manchester United shirt gifted to her by club legend Ryan Giggs.
The Countdown co-host was given the kit with Giggs’ name on the back by the former player during an appearance on the Channel 4 show.
But after being charged with domestic violence, United fan Riley has binned the shirt.
This comes after she declared her love for the Premier League club would go the same way if Mason Greenwood is allowed to return to the club.
Taking to social media, she wrote to her near 700,000 followers: “I won’t be able to support United if Greenwood remains at the club.”
One Twitter user replied to Riley’s tweet, asking whether or not she still had the shirt given to her by Giggs.
Her reply was a blunt “no”, a present she received on her 1,000th appearance on Countdown in 2013.
Giggs was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville and her sister Emma in November 2020.
He denied the charges and the jurors could not reach a verdict on the original trial before the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in July.
Greenwood, meanwhile, has his future still hanging in the balance at United.
A decision over whether or not he will return to the first-team has been delayed while the club received criticism for asking the women’s team what they thought on the situation.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was also internally suspended by the club.
However, charges were dropped in February this year when The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation from the investigation.
talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan had his say on the matter, indicating that if Greenwood was not such a valuable player, United would not be bothering so much about a potential return.
He said: “There is the other duty of care, which is Manchester United’s point of view, which is ‘we have know this young man for 15 years and we have a contractual obligation, we have a duty of care’.
“Now I would contend that this duty of care is a morality issue.
“I would contend that United might be dressing morality up as commerciality because this is a very valuable young man.”
