Rising rap star Doechii dances with fans and features new music at … – newyorkupstate.com

Geddes, N.Y. — Doechii showcased her viral hits and a newly released song in her 6 p.m. show at the Chevy Court stage on Day 3 of the Fair.

The 24-year-old bisexual rapper was a fitting choice to follow up Rebecca Black’s show on Pride Day Friday, and rainbow-clad fans young and old came to the Chevy Court stage to watch the young star. Doechii delivered a 40-minute set that featured her viral songs and some new material.

Doechii’s song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” went viral on TikTok two years ago, and her audience was locked and rapped along to the verses. That may have been the song that got her on the map, but it wasn’t the only track that Doechii fans came to hear.

After blowing up on social media, Doechii signed with Top Dawg Entertainment in March 2022. Since signing with TDE, Doechii has put out an EP and released a string of singles that built on her previous tracks to establish a unique and energetic sound. TDE is one of the biggest labels in hip-hop, with acts like SZA, ScHoolboy Q, and, until recently, Kendrick Lamar. Unlike R&B scion SZA, though, Doechii is a blue-blooded rapper, and the first female rapper signed to the label.

She put those rap skills on display throughout the set, and though she played the recordings of her verses behind her, she never relied heavily on the backing vocal track – a tough feat when you’re dancing around the stage and imploring the audience to match your intense energy.

Fans were excited to hear Doechii’s newest single, “Booty Drop,” which she released a week ago, but the crowd was the most energetic for “What It Is,” her single from earlier this year. Doechii challenged fans to perform the dance that went viral with this song, and three kids took her up on it. She brought them on the stage and they nailed the dance, a fun moment before a fun, catchy song.

After “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” Doechii finished the set with her SZA collab “Persuasive,” demanding fans clap along with the beat. For a relatively new artist, Doechii looks comfortable on the stage and is good at interacting with her crowd.

Doechii will soon be opening for select dates of Doja Cat’s Scarlet Tour, alternating with another young female phenom, Ice Spice – and it’s easy to see why. With breath control, stage presence, and vocal stamina, Doechii has the talent worthy of her viral fame.
