Scarlett Johansson says losing out on Oscar-winning film left her ‘hopeless’

Scarlett Johansson was left “hopeless” after losing out on a leading role in an Oscar-nominated film.

The 38-year-old actress has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters as she played Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But it’s not always been smooth sailing for Johansson, who was left at a crossroads when she failed to secure her dream role in the hit sci-fi thriller film “Gravity.”

“I got turned down for two roles — the first was Iron Man 2 and then the other one was Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity,” she told Variety. “I had wanted that role so much.”

Johansson said it was “sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back” when the film decided to go with another actress, Sandra Bullock, who starred opposite George Clooney as the two leads.

The film was nominated for an Oscar while Bullock earned “Best Actress” considerations.

“I felt really frustrated and hopeless,” the two-time Oscar nominee recalled. “Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?’

“The work I was being offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I was like, ‘Is this the end of the road creatively?’”

There was a silver lining for Johansson after all.

Johansson landed a role in “Iron Man 2” after actress Emily Blunt was forced to drop out of the project due to a conflicting contractual obligation.

Her role in the film ultimately led to Johansson’s own Marvel film, “Black Widow.”

“That movie wasn’t going to move the needle forward in terms of how my character was written, but there was potential for what it could be — a potential for growth in subsequent films,” she shared.

Johansson is the highest-paid woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Forbes.

The actress’s next onscreen project is Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” — due to be out next month.

And while most actors promote their latest offerings on social media, Johansson last month admitted that her fans can’t expect the same from her.

The actress said she refuses to use apps like Instagram because she’s “too fragile a person to have social media.”

“I can’t. My ego is too fragile,” she said on Monday’s episode of “The Skinny Confidential Him & Her” podcast. “My brain is too fragile. I’m like a delicate flower.”

The “Marriage Story” star said that she has “enough anxiety” in her life without social media.

“I had Instagram once for three days and when I started realizing that I’d spent 20 minutes looking at somebody’s Instagram page who worked for a friend of mine,” Johansson said. “I now know you have a pit bull and two daughters and you live in, like, Burbank.”
