Search for Greenville Symphony’s new music director in final stages – WYFF4 Greenville

The Greenville Symphony is inviting you to join in on its journey to find the next music director. Season 76 of the Greenville Symphony will feature special concerts conducted by the final six music director candidates. “They’ve created programs specifically for Greenville. So, what they’ve created for us is a traditional piece from the classical repertoire paired with some new, exciting things,” said Jessica Satava, the executive director of the Greenville Symphony. “Each program is really a snapshot of the candidate’s musical perspective. So, what you see on stage as they’re conducting is what you could expect if they, in fact, become our next artistic leader.”Satava says 160 people from across the country applied for the music director position. The symphony even received applications from international musicians. “A music director is the person who sets the artistic vision for the entire organization,” she said. “So we need someone who can conduct the orchestra very well, but we need someone with a vision who can really help us chart our future together.” Satava says what sets the final six candidates apart is their focus on the communities they serve and their interest in making music accessible to everyone. “We’re looking for someone really innovative,” she said. “Someone who is willing to really listen and learn about the community and start to incorporate what they learn with what you see on stage.” Now, Satava says, the symphony is hoping the community will come and show their support for the people hoping to carry on a tradition of excellence.“We need audiences,” she said. “We need to be able to gauge the response of the public to the experiences they’re having in the concert hall as they see these conductors.”Tickets for Season 76 of the Greenville Symphony are on sale now. If you choose to subscribe to all of the concerts of the potential music directors, you will be given a chance to weigh in on the decision through surveys and feedback. The season begins on Friday, Sept. 9, with the first music director candidate. The final candidate’s concert will take place in March. You can visit the Greenville Symphony’s website to learn more about each candidate and their concert program ahead of the performance.
