Speaker meets CM day after SC rap ‘for constituency work’ – Times of India

MUMBAI: A day after the Supreme Court slammed assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar for delaying hearings in the Shiv Sena MLAs disqualification case, Narwekar met chief minister Eknath Shinde. While the meeting on Wednesday raised eyebrows in political circles as it came 24 hours after the SC asked Narwekar to give a revised schedule for the hearing, legislature officials said Narwekar had met the CM to discuss issues related to his constituency, primarily the construction of a sea protection wall along the coast in Colaba.

Narwekar confirmed his meeting with CM Shinde was only to discuss the sea protection wall and nothing else.

A legislature official said, “There are many infrastructure projects coming up in the sea in South Mumbai, like the Coastal Road and the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL). All these are coastal projects, and the Colaba sea shore is vulnerable to rising sea levels. So the Speaker met the CM to push for the sea protection wall as a mega infrastructure project.”

The official added, “This issue is related to the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), and the CM is also the minister for urban development, so the issue of sea protection was discussed with him. It is important to ensure the sea waters don’t enter Colaba and damage coastal slums and properties.”

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday hit out at Narwekar over the delay in deciding the disqualification petitions. In an editorial in Saamna, the Sena (UBT) said saving the government of dishonest people is not defence of the Constitution but betrayal of the country.” The editorial stated that Narwekar “doesn’t know the law of a tribunal and is acting in a jihadist manner.” “Modi-Shah have made their own ‘personal law’ for running the country and Narwekar’s tribunal is advocating the same ‘personal law.’ What does Narwekar want to prove to himself by adopting a time-consuming policy? the editorial stated.
