Taylor Swift cracks up during song about forgiving Kanye West – ClutchPoints

Oh how the tables have turned for Taylor Swift and Kanye West since their infamous 2009 MTV Video Music Awards incident. Swift is now the biggest pop star in the world in the middle of an epic world tour and West is… an anti-semitic outburst shouting, sponsor-losing, Trump-loving has-been whose fame and appeal have dwindled to a minuscule size fitting for his two-letter new name, Ye.

The whole situation is enough to make a gal laugh, and it did — Saturday night at Lumen Field in the Seattle, Washington stop of Taylor Swift’s sold-out Eras Tour. Swift was in the middle of her song “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” a track inspired by fallout from her VMAs clash with Kanye.

For those with short-term pop cultural memories, at the 2009 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift was an up-and-coming pop star pivoting from her country roots, who had just been deemed the winner for Best Female Video when she was bestowed the VMA statue and had come up to the microphone to make her acceptance speech. That’s when Kanye West, at the height of his fame and rap career, decided it’d be a good idea to jump up to the mic himself, and interrupt Swift to proclaim that the award should have gone to Beyoncé. The audience and viewers at home were stunned by the audacity and rudeness of the display (remember this was a quaint time, pre-The Slap, before awards show interruptions were common). Later in the ceremony, Beyoncé graciously brought up Swift to give her the recognition she deserved (and to shrewdly distance herself from Kanye). But the incident left the audience, and worldwide fans of Swift, reeling from the display and starting to question Kanye West’s personal ethics (remember, this was a quaint time before… name your favorite Kanye West cringe move of the past decade).

Anyway, fast forward to 2016, when Kanye released a song called “Famous” in which he calls out Swift with the lyric “I made that b—h famous.” West claimed at the time that he called Swift to notify her of the offending lyrics before the song’s release. Swift denied ever being warned ahead of time. Either way, the line was clearly offensive to Swift, and she eventually fired back with her own song addressing the situation called “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.”

Which brings us to the present, and Swift’s Saturday night concert, where she couldn’t help but bust out with a hearty laugh when she got to the line “Cause forgiveness is the nice thing to do.” It’s unclear exactly what made Swift laugh so uproariously during the lyric — whether it was the absurdity of thinking back to a time when West required forgiveness for merely a single offending public outburst, or the polar opposite trajectories their careers have taken off on since then, or the delusional notion that West had anything to do with Swift’s rise to prominence as an artist.

Regardless of what brought on the giggles, Taylor Swift really had a good laugh when she got to the line, and the audience cheered their approval at the impromptu reaction.
