The Flash Director Gives Update on Ezra Miller: ‘They’re Taking Steps to Recovery’
Andrés Muschietti, the director behind the upcoming DC movie The Flash, believes in Ezra Miller despite their numerous controversies.
Muschietti knows that Miller has been making unsavory headlines for awhile now, but he stresses that Miller’s work on The Flash was superb. According to Muschietti, Miller, who goes by they/them pronouns, is an “extraordinary actor.”
“It was probably one of my best experiences working with an actor, ever,” Muschietti said during a recent Q&A with press. “They’re brilliant. [Their] contributions are constant, and also they like to do more takes than I do, which is a lot.”
He continued: “They are full of incredible emotions, and they bring them to the set everytime. [They] are an incredible comedian also, which is something that I wasn’t fully prepared for. I mean, I saw them in movies before. I thought they were funny, but when I started working with them I realized that they are an incredible comedian.”
The Flash: Director Andy Muschietti Draws Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen
The Flash is set to hit theaters on June 16, and first looks from this year’s CinemaCon have been bringing in more positive reviews for the film despite Miller’s controversies. A newly-released trailer gave viewers a deeper look at DC’s next bold swing, which will see Michael Keaton’s Batman return. The film will reportedly follow Barry Allen, A.K.A. The Flash, as he travels back in time to save his parents. Messing with time is tricky, though, and it turns out Barry’s actions have caused unbelievable chaos.
The trailer also showcases how there will actually be two different versions of Barry, a choice that Muschietti expanded upon. He also applauded Miller’s ability to capture both Barrys effectively.
“The fact that they were playing two versions of the same character, two versions that are diametrically opposed,” Muschietti said. “The Barry we all know that is neurotic, anxious, full of hardships, childhood trauma and whatnot. And the Barry that is basically none of that, and he’s absolutely carefree. It was a very fun challenge to explore those two characters for them, for Ezra, for me. It was a lot of fun.”
Miller’s past behavior has been a topic of much concern of late, as the actor has been involved in numerous unsavory stories. They have been accused of throwing a chair at a woman, grooming minors, and disappearing for a time while all of this was going on. They also had a series of legal issues in Hawaii, Massachusetts, and North Dakota.
Warner Bros. Discover briefly considered parting ways with Miller over their actions, but the star has since apologized. They said that they were suffering from “complex mental health issues” and promised to undergo treatment. They also met with WB executives in August of last year to apologize for bringing negative attention to The Flash.
With all of that in mind, Muschietti gave an update as to Miller’s current status.
“Ezra is well now,” the director said. “We’re all hoping that they get better. They’re taking steps to recovery. [They’re] dealing with mental health issues, but [they’re] well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they’re very committed to getting better.”
