Where to watch the FIFA finals

After a disappointing loss to England in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final, the Matildas battle it out with Sweden for third place in the tournament on Saturday night.

Just days after smashing Australia’s broadcast records with Wednesday night’s performance, here’s how you can watch the home side’s final game at Brisbane Stadium.

BROADCAST

Those who aren’t lucky enough to be going to the Australia v Sweden clash can catch the game live on Oprua Sport or Channel 7.

Optus Sport is the official broadcaster of the FIFA Women‘s World Cup 2023, where subscribers can watch matches live and on demand.

Seven has been broadcasting every Matildas game since their first group stage clash with Ireland on July 20.

Sunday’s final between England and Spain will be shown on Seven from 8pm AEST.

Wednesday’s semi-final between the Matildas and England was the most-watched television program since the current audience measurement system started in 2001.

The Matildas held an average audience of 7.13 million, with Seven’s broadcast reaching as many as 11.15 million viewers.

LIVE SITES

A number of designated live sites will be set up around the country where fans can show up and watch the playoff and final in the great outdoors (weather permitting).

Official live sites have been set up as part of the FIFA Fan Festival. You can check their website to find your closest venue and more information on each, but the major sites will be:

  • Adelaide’s Festival Plaza
  • Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands
  • Melbourne’s AAMI Park
  • Perth’s Forrest Place
  • Sydney’s Tumbalong Park

Of course, Federation Square is notably absent from this list; that’s been scrapped a live site since rowdy crowds surged through barriers on Wednesday night, and even set off flares.

But it was also the site of one of the greatest crowd moment when Matilda’s captain Sam Kerr scored the home side’s only goal in the 63rd minute.

Pubs, clubs and the usual licensed venues will also likely be broadcasting the game, so check out their websites and socials to confirm before heading out.

Meanwhile, Spanish royalty is heading Down Under, with Queen Letizia of Spain and her daughter Princess Sofia planning to cheer on their women’s national side on Sunday.

But England’s Prince William and Princess Kate have been slammed, with the royal couple on their summer holiday and unable to attend and watch the Lionesses clash with the Spaniards for women’s football’s top gong.

Prince William has been president of England’s Football Association (FA) since 2006, and has been a huge advocate for promoting and supporting women’s football.
