Which Direction is Wind Blowing for The Four Big Grammys? – Daily Music Roll

With the Recording Academy cutting down the number of nominees for the various categories of Grammys from ten to 8 for the 66th annual Grammy Awards, scheduled to be held on 5 February 2024, it would be harder for artists to crack the nominations. Not only have the eligibility criteria for nominations been made stricter but also the eligibility period is to be from October 1, 2022, to September 15, 2023, closing two weeks earlier than the usual time frame. So far quite a few predictions have been made as to who would bring the awards home depending on their latest releases, and the following are some of the best bets made so far according to the categories:

For Best New Artist:

Born Isis Naija Gaston, the rapper who goes by the stage name Ice Spice collaborated with  PinkPantheress in “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2”, with Taylor Swift in “Karma”, and with Nicki Minaj for the songs “Princess Diana” and “Barbie World”. Her songs have already landed among Four Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023 and she was also nominated for the best new artist at the 2023 BET Awards.

The “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2” singer, whose song peaked at No. 3 in the  Hot 100, has already been nominated for the rising star award at the Ivor Novello Awards in 2022, three NME Awards and has won the BBC’s Sound of 2022 poll.

Nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, Zimmerman’s first studio album, “Religiously. The Album”, ranked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

Beating Ice Spice and GloRilla at the  BET Awards, Coco Jones won the title of Best New Artist, and her song “ICU” ranked at  No. 63 on the Hot 100 in May.

Hopes are high for Gracie Abrams who rose to fame with her first studio album “Good Riddance”, produced by Aaron Dessner. She was also assisted on two of the songs by Matias Tellez, and she has already opened for Olivia Rodrigo on Sour Tour and Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour

Born Jason Bradley DeFord, the rapper-turned-country artist Jelly Roll might be the oldest on the list since the nomination of Andrea Bocelli 25 years ago.

After his third album, “Stick Season”, ranked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, the artist can be expected to be nominated in at least one of the four categories.

The artist’s third studio album, Génesis peaked at No. 3 in the  Billboard 200 list and went on to be the highest-charting regional Mexican album to date, giving a nomination for Peso Pluma a good chance for the Grammys.

For Album of the Year:

• Taylor Swift, “Midnights”

If chosen, it would be Swift’s sixth nomination in this category and if she wins, she would become the first person to win the Grammy for the Album of the Year four times. Currently, the artist is tied with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. The album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for 6 weeks straight.

Co-produced with artists like Babyface, Jeff Bhasker, Benny Blanco, and Shellback,  SZA’s second studio album has tied in the BET Awards with Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” for the Album of the Year category.

• Drake & 21 Savage, “Her Loss”

Having been up for the album of the year at the BET Awards in June, there is a good chance for the hip-hop album to make it to the final cut of the Grammy nominations, summing up to Drake’s third album of the year nomination and 21 Savage’s first. The album peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200.

• Lana Del Rey, “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd”

Co-produced with Jack Antonoff, Benji, Zach Dawes, Drew Erickson and Mike Hermosa, Lana Del Rey’s ninth studio album could lead her to be nominated in this category for the second time. The album ranked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

• Foo Fighters, “But Here We Are”

The Foo Fighters’ 11th studio album which peaked at No.8 on the Billboard 200 sees the band collaborating with Greg Kurstin.

• Boygenius, “The Record”

Co-produced by the trio Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, and  Catherine Marks, “The Record” peaked at  No. 4 in the Billboard 200, and has already raised expectations for a Grammy.

• Morgan Wallen, “One Thing at a Time”

An album that peaked at  No.1 for 15 weeks, Morgan Wallen’s third studio album co-produced by  Joey Moi, Cameron Montgomery, Charlie Handsome, and Jacob Durrett, gives the artist a fair shot in this category.

• Olivia Rodrigo, “Guts”

Produced by Dan Nigro, Olivia Rodrigo’s second album might win her next nomination in the category after “Sour”.

For Song of the Year:

• “Lift Me Up” written by Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna, Tems, and Ryan Coogler
• “Need a Favor” written by Jelly Roll, Rob Ragosta, Joe Ragosta, and Austin Nivarel
• “Ready As I’ll Never Be” written by Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker
