Fans may not know that Transformers star Mark Wahlberg used to be a successful rapper. His music stint started after he and his brother formed the group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and produced the 1991 debut record, Music for the People. The band did not last long, but it didn’t stop the actor from doing more hits.
Wahlberg was frequently compared with Eminem, who, at the time the actor quit his rap career, was a rising icon. Initially, the Uncharted star wanted to make his own brand and style, as he believed this would have made him successful, but the studio wanted a different approach. Somehow, this motivated Wahlberg to shift into acting.
Mark Wahlberg Remembers Past Career As Rap Music Artist
In a resurfaced interview, Pain & Gain star Mark Wahlberg recalled his days as a rap music icon and responded to controversial questions, including if he thought he would have become the Eminem of today’s generation. He told IGN:
“Could I have been Eminem? I certainly hope not. I like Eminem, I think Eminem’s really talented, but I’m trying to go a completely different route.”
Wahlberg believed had he possessed more autonomy over his music career, he would have thrived as a recording artist. At the time, he was recovering from a traumatic past that he wanted to leave behind. He continued:
“I think I could have been a lot more successful, had I been allowed to do what I wanted to do. I think the record company had one specific idea, and they wanted to go for that. I had just gotten out of jail and I wanted to make a record.”
The Mile 22 star revealed that the studio wanted to focus on the profit rather than Wahlberg’s exploration of his creative side. They wanted him to make it “a little more commercial” and collaborate with a female singer. The frustration of being unable to do what he wanted pushed Wahlberg to find another avenue to channel his talent.
Mark Wahlberg Avoids Rap Music Due To Violent Impulses
Mark Wahlberg has ultimately distanced himself from rap music as he wanted to turn over a new leaf. He admitted listening to a couple of artists, but back then, it only gave him violent urges. He said in an interview with Black Film:
“I try not to listen to rap anymore cause as soon as I do, I’m ready to bust some heads. I’ll put on some angry Tupac record on my way to church.”
His new taste in music has significantly changed, and he is proud of it. The actor revealed:
“In my next film, my character listens to that Tibetan music. I’m working with David Russel, and we start filming in June. I also listen to reggae and Oasis, and some Coldplay. I still have Nas and Jay Z. Very rarely do I turn that on.”
Wahlberg noted in the former interview that this change of interest is more profound and deep-seated than it looks on the surface. He added:
“I came from the real thing, and I was trying desperately to get away from that. I’m trying to work as hard as possible to be the best person I can be, to everybody. I mean, my faith and the love that I have in my heart is something that I want to share and spread. Doing s—t to get paid is not okay, because I truly believe it is extremely difficult for a rich man to get into heaven.”
Although his love for music is still there, Mark Wahlberg steer clears his path of everything that might pull him back from the place he worked so hard to crawl out from.
